ESL / EFL Abbreviations – Part II

GMAT – Graduate Management Admission Test.

GMAT measures a student’s verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills. It is taken by students interested in pursuing management education in the US and some other English speaking countries.

GRE – Graduate Record Examination

GRE is taken by students seeking admission to most non-management post graduate programs in the US and some other countries. GRE is conducted by Education Testing Service (ETS).

IELTS – The International English Language Testing System

IELTS is jointly conducted by the British Council, the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations and IELTS Australia.

IPA – International Phonetic Association

K12 – Kindergarten – 12th grade.

KET – Key English Test

This is the most basic of Cambridge’s series of exams

NATECLA – National Association for Teaching English and other Community Languages to Adults. NATECLA is UK based.

NATESOL – National Association of Teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages

NCTE – National Council of Teachers of English

NLP – Neurolinguistic Programming

NNEST – Non-Native English Speaking Teacher

MTELP – Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency

OE – Old English

OED – Oxford English Dictionary

PET – Preliminary English Test

This is the second of Cambridge’s series of exams.

RSA/Cambridge C-TEFLA – Certificate of Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults. This is a professional qualification for aspiring EFL teachers.

RSA/Cambridge D-TEFLA – Diploma of Teaching English as a Foreign Language. This is an advanced qualification for EFL teachers who have already taken the C-TEFLA.

SAE – Standard American English

SAT – Scholastic Assessment (Aptitude) Test

This is an entrance exam taken by students seeking admission to pre-university in the US.

TEFL – Teaching English as a Foreign Language

TEFLA – Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults

TEIL – Teaching English as an International Language

TESL – Teaching English as a Second Language

TESOL – Teaching English to Speakers of Other Langauges

TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language

TOEFL is the most common of all English proficiency exams. It is taken by students seeking admission to universities in the USA. TOEFL is also accepted by some British universities.

TOEIC – The TOEIC (pronounced “toe-ick”) is a Test of English for International Communication.

VE – Vocational English
