TOEFL iBT sections

The TOEFL iBT has four sections: reading, listening, speaking and writing

Reading

The reading section is the first section of TOEFL. It takes about 60-100 minutes. You will be given 3-5 passages for reading. You will have to answer 12 to 14 questions on each passage.

Listening

The listening section takes 60-90 minutes. You will have to listen to 2-3 conversations and 4-6 lectures. You will have to answer 5 questions on each conversation and 6 questions on each lecture.

There is a mandatory ten minute break after the listening section.

Speaking

The speaking section takes about 20 minutes. You will have to complete two independent tasks and four integrated tasks. The 2 independent tasks will require you to speak about familiar experiences. The four integrated tasks will require you to read and / or listen and then speak based on what you have read or heard.

Writing

The writing section is the fourth and last section of the TOEFL test. It takes about 50 minutes. You have to complete 1 integrated task and 1 independent task.

To complete the integrated task you will have to read or listen to a passage and then write an essay based on what you have read or heard. You can spend up to 20 minutes on this task. The second task is an independent task. You will have to write an essay on a given topic. You can spend up to 30 minutes on this task. Note that you will have to write on the topic you are given on the spot.
