September 27th, 2013 in English for children

A day in John’s life

Teacher: John, tell us what you do in the morning.

John: I get up at six o’clock. Then I brush my teeth and wash my face. At around 7.30 I have a cup of tea. Then I take a bath. I have breakfast at 8.30. Then I get ready for school.

Now let’s take a look at all the verbs in John’s answer: get up, brush, wash, have, take, get etc.

Now open a dictionary and try to look up these words. You will have no trouble finding them because these verbs are listed like this.

These are the base forms of these verbs. They are in the present simple tense.

A verb in the simple present tense takes the marker –s when the subject is a singular noun or pronoun.

When the subject is a plural noun, the verb does not have the –s marking.
