Infinitives exercise

We can combine two clauses using an infinitive. Study the example given below.

  • He went to Paris. He wanted to see the Eiffel Tower.
  • He went to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower.

The sentence given above has just one finite verb (went) and hence it is simple sentence. The verb form ‘to see’ is not a finite verb.

Combine the following sentences using infinitives.

1. The robber took out a knife. He intended to frighten the poor traveler.

2. I speak the truth. I am not afraid of it.

3. He wants to earn his livelihood. He works hard for that reason.

4. Everyone should do their duty. The nation expects this.

5. I went to the university. I wanted to talk to Professor Tailor.

6. The Assignee sold the insolvent’s property. The Assignee has to pay the insolvent’s creditors.

7. She helps the poor. She wants to relieve them of their sufferings.

8. He wanted to impress his host. So he conducted himself rather well.

Answers

1. The robber took out a knife to frighten the poor traveler.

2. I am not afraid to speak the truth.

3. He works hard to earn his livelihood.

4. The nation expects everyone to do their duty.

5. I went to the university to talk to Professor Tailor.

6. The Assignee sold the insolvent’s property to pay his creditors.

7. She helps the poor to relieve them of their sufferings.

8. He conducted himself rather well to impress his host.
