Questions you may ask and hear at the hairdressers

These are some of the English phrases you will need when having your hair / beard cut or colored at a beauty parlor or saloon.

I would like a haircut. Are you able to see me now?

I would like a haircut, please. Do I need to make an appointment?

I would like you to trim my beard. / Could you trim my beard, please?

I would like you to trim my mustache. / Could you trim my mustache, please?

Questions the hairdresser may ask

Here are a few questions the barber or hairdresser may ask before cutting your hair. Sample answers are also given.

How would you like me to cut it?

If you do not have a specific style in mind, you can say:

I will leave it to you. (In this case, the barber is free to choose a style that they think would suit you.)

If you have a specific hairstyle in mind, you may say:

I would like a trim. / I would like to trim my hair.

I would like to try a new hairstyle.

I would like a fringe. (A fringe is a shaped cutting of the front part of the hair so that it lies over the forehead.)

‘How short would you like it?’ ‘Not too short.’ / ‘Quite short’ / ‘Very short.’

‘What color would you like?’ ‘I would like chestnut brown.’

‘Do you want me to blow-dry your hair?’ ‘Yeah. I would like it blow-dried.’

‘How much is that?’ ‘That will be $25.’
