Short answers

In short answers we do not usually repeat words that have just been said. Short answers are usually made with subject and an auxiliary verb.

An example is given below.

‘Can you speak English?’ ‘Yes, I can.’

Frame short answers for the following questions using the given hints. Write your answers in the space provided against each question.

1. ‘Can you swim?’ ‘Yes, ………………………………………..’

2. ‘Did you see him?’ ‘No, ………………………………………….’

3. ‘Is she going to join you?’ ‘No, …………………………………….’

4. ‘Have you finished that work?’ ‘Yes, …………………………………’

5. ‘Do you have school today?’ ‘Yes, ……………………………………’

6. ‘Have you heard the news?’ ‘Yes, …………………………………..’

7. ‘Are you tired?’ ‘Yes, ……………………………………..’

8. ‘Did you go to his house yesterday?’ ‘No, ……………………………………’

9. ‘Will you help me?’ ‘Yes, …………………………………….’

10. ‘Have you finished drawing the map?’ ‘Yes, ……………………………………..’

11. ‘Is she your cousin?’ ‘Yes, …………………………………………’

12. ‘Are these your books?’ ‘Yes, …………………………………….’

Answers

1. Yes, I can.

2. No, I didn’t.

3. No, she isn’t.

4. Yes, I have.

5. Yes, I do.

6. Yes, I have.

7. Yes, I am.

8. No, I didn’t.

9. Yes, I will.

10. Yes, I have.

Notes

Note the structure of negative short answers: No, subject + auxiliary verb + not. The not is usually added to the auxiliary.
