How to edit your work?

March 17th, 2013 in Essay Writing

Time limit is the biggest problem that many students face while writing an exam. Unfortunately there is hardly anything that you can do about it: time limits are going to stay here. However, you can improve your score by following the tips given in this article.

Don’t make the mistake of writing until the last minute

Many students won’t stop writing until the time ends so they don’t get an opportunity to edit their work. All writers – experienced and inexperienced – make mistakes. So there is no point in expecting that you will be able to write flawlessly. Remember that good writing involves a great deal of editing. However, you can reduce the amount of time spent on editing by making good notes and organizing your ideas. Yes, it is very important. Before you start writing your essay, organize your thoughts first. Jot them down on a piece of paper and then start developing these points into neat paragraphs.

Leave at least a few minutes to read over your writing before you submit it.

Develop the habit of reviewing your work within the time limit. Leave time for editing even when you practice in class. If you don’t, you will find it difficult to do during the actual test.

Identify the type of mistakes you are likely to make

Have a good understanding of the type of errors you are likely to commit. Of course, all mistakes are not unique. You can make all sorts of errors. However, all of us have got some difficulty with certain parts of language. For example, some students find it difficult to use tenses correctly. Others may find prepositions problematic. Relative pronouns may be the biggest problem for some other students. While reviewing your work, you must look for the type of errors you are more likely to commit. While practicing in class, you should try to identify the type of errors you make all the time. Look for these mistakes while reviewing your work.

Edit quickly, but don’t skim

Editing is different from skimming and active reading. While editing your work, you don’t have to read it actively.  A common mistake that students often make while editing their work is that they read too quickly or too passively. Unfortunately this method is not very effective. Finding mistakes in your own writing is far more difficult than finding them in someone else’s work.
